Do not take Internet access for granted

Indian government has now assumed powers to order a clamp down on Internet access in the country if the situation so demands. A medium of information exchange, communication and social life that is gaining popularity by the day in India is today taken for granted by the estimated 70 million netizens in India. We have never feared a censorship as in China. The closest to a government intervention we have seen was in 2006 when blogspot blogs were blocked. You can read more on it here and here

While this has sparked a debate on what kind of scenarios would give the government an excuse to activate the Internet Kill Switch (As it is popularly referred to), it also raises questions on possible misuse.

Either ways this is a D-Day in the history of Internet growth in India. Only time will tell on its real impact on the ground.
